While the System Headquarters Office does not provide direct service to the public, the Office does provide services to its member libraries in the following areas:
Information technology
Technical services (acquisitions, cataloging, processing of library materials)
STAR outreach services to older adults
Training services for staff and board members
Administrative and financial services, including fundraising support
The Cumberland County Library System (CCLS) consists of 7 federated local libraries, 1 branch facility, a system headquarters office and an associated non-profit Cumberland County Library System Foundation. The library system provides service to more than 260,000 people in Cumberland County and a small portion of Franklin County.
Cumberland County libraries highlight access to books during Banned Books Week
As libraries across the country recognize Banned Books Week, library leaders in Cumberland County are highlighting the importance of access to a wide range of reading materials while helping families determine what books are appropriate for them.
In 2018, an article appeared on the American Federation of Teachers' website, stating: "Civic knowledge and public engagement are at an all-time low. A 2016 survey by the Annenberg Public Policy Center found that only 26 percent of Americans can name all three branches of government, which was a significant decline from previous years."
Midstate librarian recognized by Pennsylvania Library Association
A Midstate librarian was recently recognized as the 2026 New Professional Librarian by the Pennsylvania Library Association (PaLA).
The honor is awarded to those who go “above and beyond the call of duty to support the work of libraries throughout the commonwealth.” Elizabeth “Lizzy” Seidel, the Executive Director for the Joseph T. Simpson Public Library in Mechanicsburg, took home the New Professional Librarian award.
Library card sign-up month hits all the right notes

The Cumberland County Library System is encouraging residents to sign up for a free library card during Library Card Sign-up Month this September, according to a Sept. 14, 2026, press release from the county library system based in Mechanicsburg.

Renovations underway at popular Cumberland County library
The Cleve J. Fredricksen Library opened on North 19th Street in Camp Hill in January 2001.

Library president joins advisory council
Gov. Josh Shapiro appointed Bosler Memorial Library Board President Lu Conser to the council Feb. 19 for a four-year term. She is one of three trustees in the group, which also includes six professional librarians and three laypersons, for a total of 12 members.

Cumberland County Library System partners with Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra for free tickets
